Life on the Water
Rooted in History…
More than just a pretty name (and a beautiful location), The Sophie pays tribute to the historic fishing vessel Sophie Christenson and its influential role in the Poulsbo area’s history. Cod fishing in particular was key to sustaining the early community economically as well as nutritionally, and despite the changes seen around the Puget Sound over time, this era and its key players (including boats) helped to build the foundation for so much of our lives today.
Built in 1901 in Port Blakely, Washington, the Sophie Christensen was a large, four-masted schooner known for her picturesque, billowing sails. After setting records for the largest codfish haul in American history, the vessel was long remembered as one of the last of her kind when the fishing industry moved from wind power to diesel fuel.
The Sophie stands adjacent to the Poulsbo Maritime Museum where you can, if you are lucky, meet some of the descendants of the Shields family – owners of the Pacific Coast Cod Company, which built and operated the Sophie Christenson.
